Connections in the Digital Age – NZLLA Conference 2025

We had the privilege of attending the New Zealand Law Librarians’ Association (NZLLA) Conference 2025, held at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) on 18–19 September 2025. The theme, "Whanaungatanga: connections in the digital age", captured the importance of building and maintaining relationships while adapting to the rapid digital transformation in law and libraries.

Across the two days, several themes stood out:

  • AI and the evolving role of law librarians – sessions highlighted how professionals can apply their critical skills in the age of artificial intelligence, from trust and integrity to practical upskilling.

  • Tikanga Māori and cultural competency – speakers explored the growing relevance of tikanga in New Zealand law and the responsibility of information professionals to engage with Māori knowledge respectfully and effectively.

  • The future of connection in a digital workplace – from the courts’ digital strategies to the paradox of remote work, presenters reminded us that human connection remains central, even as technology reshapes how we collaborate.

Nicholas Carman, Softlink’s APAC Sales and Account Manager shared his thoughts on the conference:

“It was really good to catch up with our customers and meet new people. There were lots of valuable and interesting conversations.”

It was a valuable event and a great opportunity to reconnect with the law library community from across New Zealand and beyond. We had some great conversations with delegates, sharing how Liberty Digital and illumin can support their work in a changing digital landscape. And yes — Alex the Alpaca had a great time too, meeting new friends and soaking up the atmosphere 🦙.
