New ARLIS census paints a picture of art librarians

The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) has released the preliminary findings of a survey of the demographics of art information professionals in North America.

The Census of Art Information Professionals was the first of its kind conducted by ARLIS/NA and delved into demographics, educational backgrounds, positions, employers, salaries, credentials, job functions, professional development, professional identity, and affiliations.

What does the typical art information professional look like?

  • They are young – around half of respondents (51.5%) are aged between 25 and 44.
  • They are relatively new to the profession – over 40% of the art information professionals that responded had been in the profession for less than 10 years.
  • They are likely to be working in an academic setting – 51.7% are working in a College or University and 12.5% are working in an Art or Design School
