Strengthening Skills and Connections – A Look Back at Our Week in Papua New Guinea

On Friday 18 July, Softlink IC wrapped up a week on the ground in Papua New Guinea, delivering in-person Liberty Digital training for the National and Supreme Courts. Led by Sarah Thompson and Jacob Devine, the sessions brought together court librarians from across the country, all eager to sharpen their skills and build confidence in the system.

The week concluded with a regional user group meeting in Port Moresby, where Liberty Digital users from beyond the court network came together for a full afternoon of learning and discussion. The agenda covered everything from new Liberty Digital features and AI-supported cataloguing workflows to reporting strategies and user engagement tools like Liberty’s mobile app – Liberty Link.

“It was great to be back on the road reconnecting with our PNG library community,” said Sarah Thompson, General Manager at Softlink IC. “The energy and enthusiasm throughout the week were fantastic. These teams are committed to delivering real value for their users, and it’s a pleasure to support them in doing that.”

Attendees left with practical tips they could immediately apply – like enhanced reporting techniques, OPAC styling, and using AI to streamline metadata cataloguing. Just as importantly, they left with new connections and a renewed sense of momentum.

Training

“It was meaningful to attend the AGM, having worked with Liberty from its humble beginnings to now seeing its user base grow across PNG,” said Benzamine Chee, Acting Deputy Librarian at The University of Papua New Guinea. “This visit wasn’t just technical, we could connect with other users, do some future planning, and understand new opportunities. With the revival of the PNG Library and Information Association, we’re entering a new era for library services in the country, and Softlink IC has an important role to play in that.”

From sharing cataloguing shortcuts to answering site-specific questions during open Q&A, these sessions reinforced what we value most, helping our customers do more with their systems and build confidence in the tools they use every day.
